Verb-ing pasti sudah tidak asing lagi ya, bagi Kawan Literasi. Namun, sebagian orang masih salah memahami verb-ing semata-mata sebagai gerund. Lalu, apa sebenarnya yang dimaksud dengan gerund?

Kita ambil contoh kalimat “I love going to the beach” dan “I am going to the beach”. Kata “going” pada kalimat pertamalah yang merupakan gerund. Sedangkan, “going to” pada kalimat kedua adalah auxiliary verb (kata kerja bantu) yang artinya sama dengan “will”. Apa itu Gerund?
Gerund adalah bentuk -ing dari sebuah verb (kata kerja) yang bisa digunakan sebagai Noun (kata benda) pada Subjek atau Objek dalam kalimat. Misalnya:

Jenis-Jenis Penggunaan Gerund
Gerund sendiri ternyata terbagi lagi menjadi beberapa jenis, Kawan Literasi. Diantaranya yaitu gerund sebagai subjek kalimat, sebagai objek preposisi, sebagai pelengkap, setelah phrasal verbs ataupun special expressions. Simak contohnya di bawah ini:
1. Gerund sebagai Subjek Kalimat
Sebagai subjek kalimat, maka gerund terletak sebelum kata kerja atau verb. Contohnya yaitu:
- Smoking can increase the risk of heart problems.
- Travelling is my hobby.
- Eating healthy food is important.
- Brushing your teeth is a must.
- Taking vitamins would be very beneficial for our health.
2. Gerund sebagai Pelengkap Verb to-be
Selain sebagai objek, gerund juga dapat berfungsi sebagai pelengkap atau complement dari kata kerja to-be. Kata kerja to be yaitu is, am, are, was, were, atau be. Berikut ini penggunaannya dalam kalimat:
- One of his responsibilities is arranging meetings with clients.
- The next agenda would be attending seminars.
- For some people, the hardest thing about learning a language is understanding the grammar.
- Her hobby is listening to country music.
- The most unforgettable moment was getting to know great people.
3. Gerund setelah Phrasal Verbs
Phrasal verbs atau kata kerja frasa terdiri dari kata kerja + preposisi atau keterangan, seperti keep on, end up, give up, puts off. Beberapa phrasal verbs juga diikuti kata to sebagai preposisi, diantaranya to look forward to, to take to, to be accustomed to, to get around to dan to be used to. Berikut contoh kalimatnya:
- I ended up buying the bag after a long time of consideration.
- When will you give up smoking?
- I look forward to hearing from you soon.
- I’m used to jogging in the morning.
- He doesn’t really take to studying Math.

4. Gerund sebagai Objek Preposisi
Gerund juga bisa digunakan sebagai objek setelah kata preposisi seperti in, for, about, Contoh kombinasi preposisi yang diikuti oleh gerund adalah sebagai berikut:

5. Gerund setelah Ekspresi Tertentu
Ada beberapa kalimat atau ekspresi yang diikuti oleh gerund, seperti berikut ini:
- have fun/ a good time + -ing
- have trouble/ difficulty + -ing
- have a hard time/ difficult time + -ing
- spend/ waste + expression of time/ money + -ing
- sit/ stand/ lie + expression of place + -ing
- find/ catch + pronoun/ noun + -ing

- I had a good time hanging out with my old friends.
- I have difficulty understanding the lecture.
- I have a hard time handling my responsibilities.
- She wastes so much time watching all the series today.
- I stand there wondering what to do next.
